It’s all very detailed. The big part—I think that was the biggest thing with everything—was to make it as realistic as possible in the way each of its parts are animated.
The way that the cab is animated in this piece is a big deal. Not only the cab is animated. It’s a whole truck animation that is very detailed but has no resemblance. When you’re drawing the cab, you’re actually animating all the pieces of the cab, like all of the windows and everything. I used the software Blender to do all the shading in post-production. It’s a tool that allows you to use digital light and shade and all that stuff—and then to use photogrammetry and all those techniques. It’s super cool.
What kind of material does Blender use? Do you think you can replicate the real-life car in the game?
There’s a lot of stuff in that game that we were using as reference. We did a lot of reference for the engine for that game. We did quite a lot as far as using the engines. Because the thing is, we didn’t use the actual car. We were shooting in the game for about a year. We had a lot of reference, but it’s definitely an experience—and not as far as the real game gets in the engine.
There were a few times that you made a decision, let’s do this, but you then realize how hard it is to actually use the car, and then you end up not doing it. It was super important not to get the car wrong. It’s really something that you really have to think about before you start doing something, but once you start doing something, there’s no limit. We have a couple of pieces where I would’ve done a lot better if I had used the real car, or tried to do more with a real car.
Why did you make each of the wheels different colors? Does that reflect in gameplay?
You start thinking about making different colors and stuff and when you start thinking about different colors and stuff, something different pops up in your mind. There was this idea. You start to think that maybe this color really fits. Maybe someone should be making this wheel. It’s about a whole set of considerations. For example, if you’re talking about a really, really bright color like red, then that’s not a good color for the wheels. We decided not to use those colors, but the wheels would
