There are a few simple things to look out for. First of all, you need a sketch pad.
Here is an example which I made using a pad. Just like a pencil drawing and tracing paper, pencil sketch pads are essential to creating and working on an entire design.
The size of the pad is vital as you have to be precise with your strokes in order to get the best results.
As for sketching areas, always leave at least the first 3 – 5cm of sketching on the pad. Once you get down to where you need to be, draw as much as possible and then flip the pad over. You now have a blank and a new piece of paper with your original sketch.
Now, here is where you want to start your design. Start adding lines and curves, drawing details in small brush strokes.
You want to start simple and then evolve throughout the drawing process.
Also, in order to start drawing circles you first need to know where to draw the point of entry into the circle. So, once you know where to go, draw a circle on the pad and trace this by hand in a circular manner.
You then need to repeat this process for every circle.
In the diagram below, you will see how to use a grid. The grid is the perfect tool for making good pencil sketches. It helps you to get a good shape and the grid helps you to sketch quickly and in line with your intended design. I use this grid exclusively, as it helps me to create sketch lines immediately and not waste time using drawing glasses to draw lines. The grid also helps when you are drawing at full size.
Another big factor in pencil sketching is to follow the direction of the line to begin.
For instance, if you are sketching in the middle of a circle, keep a pencil mark as you trace your circle to create a line leading into the circle. As soon as the circle starts moving in line, trace the same line into the circle, and draw a dot in the middle. Don’t forget to follow the line with a dot to indicate that you have reached the final point of the entire design, as well as to ensure your line of thought connects with the intended shape of the circle. Don’t forget to start and end.
