It’s really simple, because there is a very simple method in terms of the drawing. The first thing you really need to know is where to start the sketch, but for the car we went with a car from the 1970’s, or maybe 1980’s, and we didn’t make the sketch any bigger, just to simplify it and give it a very nice shape.
So the first thing you need to think about is to find the most horizontal distance so that it’s easy to draw through-out that. From there you can go and start drawing.
When you finish the sketch you can see the shape as you drew it and you can compare with the image that we took. It’s a very easy way that you can draw a car: you can draw a circle on the canvas and compare it to the image that you took. So you can start doing this very quickly and start getting better at drawing.
What parts of your sketch did you go to the most time to make sure that you actually got?
Well I went to a lot of the important details. For example, we needed to use red inside the window, like a real blue glass in the late 70’s. We also needed to make sure the headlights are in the correct place, because the headlights are normally on the top. A good rule is that if you have headlights on the top of the car then you need headlights on the bottom, so I went to the top for the headlights to be facing the direction of the road, and for headlights on the bottom: facing the direction of the road.
It’s only one of the things that I go through a lot of time because I tend to try to put things in a certain order, and if I don’t, things will appear to be too complicated.
What do you do when you’re not drawing the car and your mind takes over?
Usually when I’m busy I will look for a good reference. I look to what somebody else took before and go in the opposite direction and check to see if my thoughts are also in the correct place. For most of my sketches I try to keep in mind this.
When I’m painting something else I’ll come to that reference, and if the car is more detailed it gives me a chance to work a bit faster. If it’s more basic and simple then it will take longer time to make it work, because I don’t do anything fancy. If my mind is clear and I know what I
