And who wins? Canada has a rich tradition of international football—especially in the National Football League—and is a key player and promoter of international sports throughout North America. In the CFL, there have been multiple leagues that operate across North America, most notably in the National Football League (now played in two separate formats) and in the National Basketball Association (also now played in two separate formats) as well as NCAA Division I Football (in five different divisions), in Canada. The CFL, however, is most well known for it’s National Football League (formerly referred to as the Canadian Football League or “L”League) and NCAA Division I Football (Division I Football is the current football division used by Division I colleges). And so, for most Canadians, this is their version of the CFL. The CFL has hosted the Canadian national anthems, Canada’s Olympic Games, and Canada’s Winter Olympics, the latter of which was in Vancouver in 2010. Although the CFL has had many other teams—the Quebecor Argos, the Montreal Alouettes, and the Toronto Argonauts to name a few—the national anthems were the only ones heard for years on end in Canada. Now, with the launch of both the CFL’s Montreal Alouettes and Toronto Argonauts, we have a whole new Canadian national anthem. The NFL has had an anthem for decades. The Olympics have long been in motion, and the CFL, with the launch of its Montreal Alouettes, will have just begun. Therein lies the issue. While the CFL is only six months old, it is already experiencing the growth of American football through the NFL—a trend that has been seen even in the last two years for the CFL. The NFL is only three leagues from the Canadian Football League, but it has been growing rapidly in a small market like Montreal, which is home to over 1,000 players—and is very rich with football fans. While its team’s and players have a history of playing in the NFL, many Canadians have played professionally in the NHL when they were young, and the CFL has seen a major surge in popularity from players who played in the NFL as well. The average CFL game takes about 80 minutes from start to finish. It is often a two-man game of two-back to four-on-four, with a large contingent of Canadians on the field at the same time. And while I cannot compare this American football with Canada’s CFL or NBA, I can compare this football game with the NFL. Many
