For this question, we refer to NAP as the maximum length that a horse (or equine) can be under its own weight, which can be defined as maximum speed (and possibly a little less) for a given length. In other words, to know the NAP, we’ll first need to know the maximum maximum speed of a horse at a given length. Here at St. Petersburg Horse Training School, we use the term NAP in horses to refer to the maximum possible speed of a horse (when the weight of the horse itself is not a factor). We do NOT use the term NAP in horses to refer to the maximum possible speed of a horse (when the weight of the horse is taken into account), or the maximum acceleration of a horse (see this article about Acceleration for reference).
For horses with hooves, our maximum NAP is around 35-38 cm of maximum speed (depending on the weight and length). This is the maximum NAP for horses with hooves, which is the maximum possible speed of all horses. This figure is calculated for all horses (including those that have hooves), while not counting any horses that never have hooves. Our NAP is always between 2 and 4 km/h for all our horses.
There are two types of horses that have long legs (and this applies to both horses with long legs and those with short legs, for example the Russian Spitz horses). This is the case the most for American and Scottish Shetland ponies, which will have a maximum NAP around 35-37 cm when the weight of the horse itself is not a factor. When the weight of the horses is taken into account, the maximum NAP for American and Scottish Shetland ponies is around 40-42 cm.
The long legs also come from the fact that the horses that are long, often use their rear legs to push one-another with their front back legs.
For horses that have a front front bone (like the Russian Spitz), the maximum NAP is more like 35-38 cm if the weight of the horse is taken into account (as there’s really not much weight in the front foot (which makes the front bone less powerful)).
