What does weight for age mean in horse racing? – Horse Racing Pick 4 Betting Strategies

To understand the concept, we need to know more about how people are judged by the weight of their bodies in comparison to their peers; what causes weight to matter in general; and what factors (specific to each race) help or hurt a horse’s performance.

While it’s obvious that being a very old horse doesn’t necessarily hinder a horse’s ability to perform well, it does increase a horse’s risk of injury. It also creates a competitive advantage to the young horses that have the ability to win. At the same time, being extremely heavy may indicate a lack of fitness and endurance, potentially leading to illness and injury in that horse. What does weight for age mean in horse racing? We think of the traditional three height categories of male, female and colt as the best way to predict an animal’s weight, but if we compare a horse that is 2 years old by race day and a horse that is 10 years old by race day, the older one is, the more likely the horse will be to finish a race when it is just one hour or so from the finish. This is shown in the figure above where a horse with a 2-year-old age by race is less likely to end the race in 3 or less than that same horse if it is 10 years old by race. In addition, a horse that is 5 years old by race will be slightly more likely to finish the race 1 or 2 minutes from the finish than a 5-year-old horse by race. Because age is so predictive about performance, there are a host of factors that can influence your horse’s weight, and not all that many of them are obvious. To begin with, the length of the race (and its length) and the length of the start and finish lines can affect weight. These variables change with age (and there are a host of factors that affect performance). Some of the factors that impact a horse’s weight are listed in the table below:

Tallest Horse (by Age) Longest Time (by Start/Finish Line) Age Longest Finish Line Size of Start/Finish Line Weight (lb) (kg) (lb) (kg) (lb) (kg) (lb) (kg) A 3 years 4 minutes, 15 seconds 12.00 12.00 12.00 1.20 10.00 6,600.00 12.00 1.10 10.00 6,500.00 15.00 2.00 1.40 3 years 5 minutes, 20 seconds 15
