The secretariat was the largest of all the bridges across the Thames at a length of 23 feet, or 9 yards. However, because of it’s width and shape, the bridge was called the secretariat bridge. Historically, the secretariat bridge has been called the Secretariat Bridge since at least 1630. It was first named in 1641, but was renamed in 1643 as the secretariat bridge because of the large number of passengers who used the bridge each day to cross the Thames, and the traffic that followed.

The name secretariat bridge was given in honor of Sir John and Jane Seymour, the first members of the elite secretariat in England and, according to one account, the first in the entire world.

In 2003, just 5 years after construction began, the Secretariat Bridge in London, England collapsed, killing eight people and injuring over 100 more.

The collapse of the bridge occurred on a single day due to a faulty decking. Although the bridge was only partially opened, the decking was already at an inadequate condition, according to The Guardian.
