The speediest of all, and certainly most important, is the one on horseback. For example, there are some that can run at speeds far in excess of 100 km/h, and in reality these are the horses that make up most of our stock. A number of these horses are called “freestyle ranches” and were originally designed for the racewalk (though most are now used for training purposes). For example, the legendary Rodeo is a 200m equestrian event on the track. These are fast horses, which means they can make rapid changes of direction (like a man who makes a turn suddenly), and they are all over the place. So they have to be kept behind a protective fence. The fence is there to keep them out of the way of other horses, and to keep them out of your view, so there is always the danger of an incident when they are on the track. To avoid problems, we like to have our horses used for training, since that makes it so much easier to get a feel for them, and they are always used on a race course for our own personal competitions. One of our most notable racers, George “Stiff-Armed” Kincaid, won the Kentucky Rodeo in 1978, and his horse had a record time of 97.7 km/h.
It was at the Kentucky Rodeo that we first established that you really didn’t need a professional horse-racing team to win your own racehorse. In fact, it’s not even necessary. We have had some amazing results from using a combination of our thoroughbreds and racing trackers, and it is no surprise that many of the most successful professional racers are the very same ones. If you have ever tried to get yourself a professional racetrack, you know that it is an incredibly expensive proposition, and that any number of times you’re going to lose money. But you don’t, and neither does your racetrack, because you know one hundred per cent that they will bring home the bacon. Our trackers are the best in the world, and they are a great way to ensure that your horse will be ready to race at any time, anywhere, anywhere, while you can train and care for him himself. There is also the chance that one of your other horses will become a professional racing winner on your ranch. For example, I was fortunate to have our St. Mark’s Cross horse win the Kentucky Lumberjack R
