Alzheimer is caused by a wide range of genetic and environmental factors.
In 2013 a study published in the journal Molecular Psychiatry compared genes linked to Alzheimer’s or other diseases in 46,000 people who took part in the Framingham Study, which was conducted by the US National Institutes of Health and the Harvard School of Public Health. The study found that genes were independently linked to at least six different types of Alzheimer’s, adding to what has always been known about the genetic basis of Alzheimer’s.
In addition, scientists linked genes to memory loss in laboratory animals, and they now know of five genes in people, the most significant of which is called DRD4. This gene is associated with the loss of memory and is found to be associated with increased risk of Alzheimer’s.
