After a while and more careful listening, I think I understand where the problem resides. First, the system seems to be configured to read a lot of new data each time a photo is loaded. At first glance, this may seem like a huge advantage. After all, in an Internet world with ever-increasing bandwidth, the chances for you to lose a photo you have saved are miniscule.

But then consider that for every one photo you add to the library, Google will now read the last 1000. That’s enough to fill an SSD for around 10 years. It’s more than enough!

So how should you store your photographs? This is a good question. The main solution is to use the cloud-based, Google-managed cloud storage service: Google Drive. As for using the Drive, it should be easy to determine which users are actively working with photos.

Now, it doesn’t matter exactly how many pictures you store in Google Drive. At one level, your photos may be in the “safe” category: photos you don’t need. At another level, they may be in “archive” mode, which means that they might not be useful for years. But the best strategy is to have a reasonable plan, and the cloud to back it up.

The first step is to make sure that no one knows about your account. It is critical that no one in your household has ever uploaded any photos to Google Drive before, or, at least, nothing of the sort. Some photos might be stored on other files systems, or on the local hard drive of someone else. In any case, you should do your best to separate your home photos from the photos you have uploaded to Google Drive.

Once you have this done, move onto the next step.

2. Start your Photos app.

Go into the Photos app in the Google Drive app. This will open a dialog box, showing you the photos you have in Google Drive.

Click any of the photos to see it in the full view.

3. Check that Google Drive is working.

Check that the Photos app is working properly. There may be several items, such as a video or a text post, in the view pane. You should only see one item there – the photos you have in Google Drive.

4. Now save your photos.

In the Photos app, right click on the photo you want to save and select “Send to Drive.” If prompted
