Not anymore.

But I’ll use Photoshop, for a bunch of reasons.

First and foremost, I can save on space by not needing Photoshop. I get to create stuff that I don’t waste time making. Also, it’ll help me with research – things like weather conditions and camera settings that can change from shot to shot – and it’s the only software I can use to create complex images that need no complex edits.

Second, I can use it to make my images look great. My friends often ask me how I get my images to look so natural and perfect. I think it starts with a good camera (I’m using a Nikon D3200 for this) and an understanding of the fundamentals of color, lighting, and composition. I also like to give my subjects a bit of a kick with a few shots of some water.

Third, I can use it to capture interesting moments in my life. For example, my wife and I recently made it to Scotland. We stopped in Edinburgh. We had a really rough day photographing tourists in the city. I had to make some pretty crazy head shots so I did some research on the tourist sites that I would like to shoot. The images I got back that weekend were incredible.

And finally, Photoshop gives me great tools. I can do a ton of fancy stuff with it but most photos of me won’t get better from the editing stage. I just can’t afford to spend another $30 million on post-production. Photoshop has allowed me to do really cool things all along the way.

Do you use Lightroom?

Sure, but not in the way you might think.

I started learning photoshop for photography and Lightroom was never my go-to app. I learned it to take pictures. I didn’t need to edit anything. The editing is the heart of Lightroom which is a great package, particularly for beginners.

But the good thing about my new software is that it really allows you to control every aspect of your images. You can shoot with black and white, you can shoot for color and add highlights and do really cool stuff like make sure the light in the background is right (see the tutorial below) – it really lets you create amazing photos. If I was a professional photographer, Lightroom would be my go-to app.

I’m still going through my process (I haven’t edited the photos in a while). I
