About one hour after the 9/11 attacks, two U.S. Army soldiers in Afghanistan heard a loud boom followed by an explosion at a nearby air base. The men, then in uniform, raced through the base, which housed Special Forces units, to the cockpit of an M1 tank that was positioned on a hillside.
One of them pulled out his rifle. “This thing is going to blow,” he yelled. The blast, which was about 1,600 feet up, sent the tank tumbling to ground. Two of the soldiers died on the way to the medical tent, where another soldier began taking over the controls. The sound was deafening and the tank suddenly turned over. The soldiers on the side of the M1 were hit in the back when one of them was thrown backward.
The incident was recorded on Army military intelligence data, which later came to be known as the Waco Tape. Though it has been lost to history, it reveals that the soldiers’ first impression of that night was correct: that a small, well-armed terrorist army was standing guard over them.
In the weeks that followed, the men who recorded the Waco tape — in their spare time and under the careful supervision of their commanders — kept the audio in his mind as he worked away on the screenplay for “The Hunt,” a film based on those events.
“I think some of the memories are just so vivid and clear that if you listen to them again, you would not believe you were there,” he said.
In interviews with “The Hunt” filmmakers, the survivors of the tank-crash described being so alarmed at the prospect of a larger, more advanced terrorist threat, they felt they needed to act and made a split-second decision. The tape is not available on video, and its authenticity has never been questioned. But its authenticity and impact are now front and center in the war-story discussion after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
“The Waco tape is an eye-opening experience,” said Lt. Col. Michael Varnum, a former Army intelligence officer who has written a series of books about soldiers’ reactions to terrorist threats after the terrorist attacks.
