No. Lightroom is free. Yes, it’s a paid product. There are two different flavors, the standard edition ($50 each) which costs $149 or $39 annually, and the premium edition which is $199 each.
Is Photoshop CC worth all that money?
Photoshop CC is, I think, the best free photo editor. It has a huge number of features that are well thought of—they’re free—yet there’s also a number of plugins that let you do advanced things to make things better. You can save huge amounts of time by editing with Lightroom CC. Plus, it’s extremely lightweight and you can export multiple images in Photoshop using the built-in browser.
For example, in Photoshop it would take you a long time to go through a list of images with all their metadata, and then to do something to each image. Or you could use Photoshop to extract elements of a picture and make them disappear—which is exactly what I want to do. But it costs a bit of time, so it’s not worth it for everyone. If you’re an advanced user, Lightroom is worth it.
Do I need to do an advanced lightroom setup in order to edit with Lightroom?
If you do a whole bunch of images in a photoshop session, you probably don’t need one very advanced lightroom setup. In fact, it probably won’t work at all for a lot of people. It’s best to use Lightroom without a lot of fancy stuff and work like normal. In general, though, I’d say that most of my clients who work in photo or print are people who will look at an image and decide they really want to have a bunch of features in order to get an image as sharp and sharp as they can and then have a professional professional photo editor do it without them.
If you want to be an expert at editing with lightroom, you’re not going to get good results unless you have a really good knowledge of what’s going on, and an incredibly good understanding of both how the software is working and what your personal needs are. That requires both time and knowledge.
Now, there are some Lightroom users who know how to use Lightroom and are excellent at what they do but who are also great at editing in others software because they’re good at what they do. I’d give those two groups roughly the same rating for how useful Lightroom is as an editing tool for them.
