Image editing: It was not the very first reason I wrote the book, but it is the primary one. I believe that images, especially video, have a strong emotional and spiritual impact. They also have a strong commercial benefit. If you can edit them as best you can to add value, you add value to the photographer, and you add value to the consumer. If a photographer can edit their photo in such a way that they can sell the resulting product, then so be it. That’s what I’ve always believed.
What is the goal of your photography?
As I’ve gotten older, I’ve found that I still really enjoy photos. My photography isn’t about capturing something, but capturing what I find interesting in the moment. These days I don’t think I’m particularly happy about the things I capture, but even more so when they aren’t mine. And my favorite moments are the moments I can’t capture, the moments I know I’ll share, and the moments I’ve been waiting for.
Photography is about the creation of a narrative. For me, there is no one “right” way to photograph. For most people, taking the shot is just a starting point. For me, the shot is where the story begins.
What are 3 things in your shooting style that you like?
I am not a professional photographer, just a hobbyist. I’ve been shooting my whole life and have always loved taking people outside. But I am more familiar with film than digital camera now. And in fact I prefer film, because it has a different light meter to the digital one. I shot this book in an old Kodak film camera, and I’m sure it is a bit “weird” in terms of how film and digital look. It’s all about balance (my only real exception to being a bit unusual with photos). I also like to look up to people in the business for their work, and also to read their blogs and articles.
Favorite images?
That is really difficult question. I don’t have a favourite. I don’t always like the same things. At times I shoot a specific type of object in certain situations. But my favorites have always come out of the moments and people that come to me.
I often shoot children, sometimes to try and provoke feelings of wonder, sometimes just to provoke fear or fear that I will end up in a place. It’s always a balance, and most of our emotions come from
