A team of scientists found evidence of ancient human footprints and bones in a cave in northern California.

The researchers say the discovery raises the possibility that humans first ventured to the area during the age of dinosaurs.
“What’s remarkable and what I always love about this project is that this is not a single site that’s the end-all of anything, but it’s a window to the past,” said researcher Jeff Pettis, the research director of the Center for Earth and Space Science at the University of California at Berkeley. “It’s a way to get at the history of how the continents shifted and how the Earth came to be.”
The project has been underway since 2011 in the San Bernardino Mountains of northern California and involves scientists analyzing rocks and soil samples for clues about the history of the region. They’ve also examined bones and footprints from three different species of dinosaurs. So far they have uncovered about 60,000 fragments of human and dinosaur footprints and bones.
The team’s latest finds include several feet of foot prints and a bone fragment.
According to Nature Communications, researchers say they found footprints in the form of tracks and an animal’s claw. The bones were found in the rocks below the cave, which dates to some time in the late Triassic period.
Pettis said the discovery raises the possibility that human activity may have played a role in the extinction of some dinosaurs, in addition to the arrival of humans around 55 million years ago.
“There are all sorts of questions about how those species are now being represented,” Pettis said in a statement issued by the Berkeley Lab.
