On Sept. 1, the Republican National Committee (RNC) decided to change the name of the Republican National Convention in Cleveland to the Great Awakening Convention, in order to honor the role played by African-Americans in the movement for independence.

As a result of the RNC leadership’s decision, many African-Americans have criticized their party for attempting to erase their history, which included fighting for the abolition of slavery and civil rights.

According to the Republican Party’s official website, “It’s time to acknowledge the extraordinary contributions of African-Americans in our history. It’s time to recognize their contributions to our politics and our nation. It’s time to end the smear of history against our great forefathers, their role in freeing the slaves. It’s time to honor the African-American community and take a stand for all Americans.”

The announcement was met with criticism quickly from black political activists. In a tweet, NAACP National President Cornell William Brooks cited the RNC’s move, saying, “They want us all to know that slavery has been completely erased from our history and history books, and now they are trying to pass a totally bogus convention in Cleveland, with a bunch of white members that will just continue to deny the African-American community the full benefits of our history and our freedom, their history and freedom.”

Brooks added, “The RNC is ignoring the contributions of Black Americans and African-Americans in the Civil Rights Movement and is working against them, because we aren’t interested in a convention at which white folks are allowed to make our history look worse so that they can win the black vote. We are not interested in a convention on behalf of white supremacists who want to hide the truth about how we were treated.”
