But now, one company is trying an altogether more insidious approach. On Saturday, Nov. 3, the company announced an initiative by New York to ban tobacco products from children’s playgrounds, in parks and on playground equipment. The new law will go into effect on the first of the year.
“We will no longer allow tobacco products in kids’ playgrounds, in parks and on playground equipment,” the company said in a press release. “This measure is necessary to protect the health of these kids by discouraging the use of tobacco products that may pose an additional risk to their health.”
For the past 25 years, a company owned by Philip Morris, that is the largest producer of cigarettes, has been pushing an “all-or-nothing” approach to selling cigarettes: if you are a smoker, there isn’t anything you can do. But if you are looking for a substitute, you have to jump through hoops.
