There is nothing more disappointing than going through the motions and playing out your life as though nothing is happening, just because that’s what you’ve been used to. There should be nothing left to do but to keep playing. –Bart Simpson
What an incredible year for football in Australia! It’s been the year of big wins, major tournaments, and a massive influx of youth, bringing us into a new era of football. It’s been a phenomenal year for women’s football in Australia, with the new Hyundai A-League in the form of the A-League in Western Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific Islands. I don’t know what the hell we’re going to call it next; women’s football, elite women’s football.
As the second-ever Women’s International Cup (WICS) takes place, and our first two years of Women’s Football (WFF) in the country take place, we’ve also experienced the emergence of the women’s game in Queensland, with teams from the Brumbies and Waratahs both earning an A-League place this year, along with the return of the Brisbane Roar to the State League. The Women’s National League has already started in Queensland, and while it’s a slow start, it’s an exciting time for women’s football in Queensland, for women’s football in Australia, and for us. These changes mean the future is looking bright, and this new football season is shaping up as an amazing ride.
There are some issues with the game in Australia that can make the league feel even harder than it already is, with new fans and some of the players feeling disenfranchised about the status quo. In this article I will cover some of the bigger issues and what can be done to address these issues, and I’ll start by talking about how the A-League and the WFF can help solve these issues.
In the past we’ve had women’s football teams with a lack of diversity, with far too many white, mostly male teams and players playing in Australia’s women’s competitions (particularly after the retirement of the Swans). With all of the new talent coming through, it looks like the issue will change with a small amount of time, but a long time can get away from you fast.
