A lot of people assume that you just shoot the models in the same lighting they’re in, and they’re happy to do that. However, a lot of things can’t be repeated on a macro level, so the photos really come down to what works. You know that when you show them off and they’re happy, because they got to keep that, it’s a bonus. So it’s all about what a photographer can actually do with that light, and what will be interesting for the subjects, and how I feel right now when I’m looking at a photo. I try to think about the same things over and over again, and I’m constantly looking for opportunities to make that change and try something different. I also start to think about lighting and composition differently, so that kind of stuff is really helpful when it comes to finding a new way.
Do you have a favorite product shot?
Oh man, that’s a tough one. I mean, I’m not really a fan as a person of products, and I’ve never really looked at any as an object. I’m more into products as objects on photos, but I guess I love that kind of objectification. A lot of people use products as objects. I don’t really think about it that way. For me, it’s more, “I want to see what it looks like; how it feels when it’s on me.” That’s why we’re showing a lot of people a lot of product shots. We do so many product shots all year long, so a lot of people have the opportunity to put their arm around a product and look at it from a different side. I’m just a really slow learner, honestly. I always have to learn. I think it’s easy to give someone a product and take it away and say, “Oh, it’s overkill,” and I think that’s silly. I believe the whole point of photography is that it’s about perspective and making things look better than they were. It’s really about the experience of looking at things in the way it should just look, at the end of the day.
Anything you want to share about upcoming events?
My wife Ann and I are super excited about the upcoming show at the Armory, and we’re really excited about the show going on in the summertime. We have a pretty large party at the Armory from May 21-24. The Armory also has a really cool summer show, it’s called the Fall Season. I’ve
