In many ways, photography is a perfectly respectable but somewhat controversial business, one that is only really relevant because of its high profile. For many, it was a form of rebellion against the status quo. It’s a career choice based on personal preference. It’s a way for people of all ages to participate in the public realm, which is where social media fits in. If you’ve ever seen a photograph on the subway, there is something about the look and feel of those photographs that captures people’s attention, whether it be their mood of happiness, or an image that captures their fear or excitement. I think when you think of photography, it almost always comes back to the feeling of connection. It comes back because photography is a tool for creating connections. You don’t make money through photography. If you do, great. If you only make money through the media of digital capture that is, you can always go back to the old days and look for more people to photograph. There are always people you can’t get to because you’re so close or someone’s already on the road, but if you’re close enough, you can always photograph them. And if they want to be photographed for you, they’ll tell everyone about you.
Is it tough taking a break from the daily grind to explore photography for a few months?
I’ve always thought that photography is work for people with something to lose. The best and hardest part isn’t actually the actual photography itself, but the feeling of connection. I like to think that it’s an art and not a science. It’s one of these things where it’s easier to focus on the science than the art. If you’ve seen some of my images, they’re the best that anyone can ever do. They have a real connection to people. It’s just a matter of finding what feels right to me, and sometimes it’s finding that you don’t have to compromise by working a lot. I’m not always able to go back to it every day, but that’s the way I’m wired. It’s fun and it’s a challenge, but a challenge which I’m willing to undertake. There is so much that I love about photography. It’s not always easy for us though. One of the challenges in this industry is knowing that you are on a very dangerous path if you don’t take the risks. Many of the more popular people in this world are only interested in what is popular. Photography isn’t popular, it’s a part of our world. We
