You have to be an experienced photographer. A photographer who was involved in the war, a soldier or a journalist should be one. If you want to become one, you have to have a lot of experience. So I will tell you the usual job of a photojournalist is to find the scene, shoot it and be there during the event. Your job is to photograph the scene and tell the viewer what is going on.
As a photographer, I have to be on my toes with a lot of other photographers. There are a lot of other photographers looking for what’s going on. This is the best time to make a decision which photo to take. I have a lot of choices in a photo I want to take. I don’t want to do this.
How do you go about photographing military bases?
My first job I ever did in the military was for an event called the Fourth of July celebration on an aircraft carrier, in Norfolk. That was a great event to photograph because there is a lot of energy around the celebration. It’s a massive thing to photograph. On top of that there are thousands and thousands of people who want to be there, and to capture that moment of that magnitude, I had to do a lot of work. I had to be able to keep a high intensity focused on the scene where I was shooting. This was a big event, but there was a lot of activity so the energy of the crowd in the air was really strong.
What was the hardest place to photograph for you?
The hardest place to photograph is when people have to leave the base and go outside.
But also the least hard place is when you’re at the base with the base’s official people. When you’re there, you don’t have to worry about anyone being off base, you can be at your best. This is when you see all the military people wearing their black uniforms and hats and black boots.
What’s the most popular picture you’ve taken during the war?
The most popular picture I took was of this little boy who was crying because his friends had been killed in Afghanistan. That was a very serious photo, because he was on the back of a truck with a bullet hole in his back, and the truck had to be towed away by a helicopter. The photo that I loved the most in the war was a group out running from sniper fire. They were just running and I just shot the entire group. I loved the feel
