Well, you just need to have good gear, and the ability to work with some pretty cool stuff. I would usually use what some folks might call a “laptop camera”, but you could literally use whatever you wanted to work with if you wanted to. I would tend to use Canon DSLR’s at the time as well, but I have had some success using more recent, better lenses that come with the camera. A few of my favorites include the Canon EOS SL1, Canon EOS Rebel T5, and the Canon EOS M, with a few Canon EOS 5D Mark II and Canon 1Ds Mark III models as well. The best lenses for the job would probably be the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8L and the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II which are both amazing for certain kinds of work I have. The Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II is just great for landscape work because it doesn’t get in the way of the photographer and allows a lot more room in the frame and gives the photographer the ability to get closer to the subject than they actually needed to.
In addition, a camera with an active autofocus system is extremely crucial for many of these pictures, and I really like the Nikon D700 and Nikon D800 for that reason.
Finally, be sure to have some creative lighting skills and understand what works during certain photography situations. I think the best advice is to try to keep your lights on as low as possible. This will not only make it easier to see details in the subject, but it will also mean that you can get the best out of your lens, and that you have a better shot.
I do most of my photography with a Canon EOS 5D Mark II or DLSR, and I would say I’d recommend either or both of those lenses during each of my photos. If you want to try out a different camera, but not as much gear or don’t feel like going down the camera path, you can check out the Canon EOS 550D or EOS 5DS R, which are very good beginner cameras but you may not feel as comfortable with the settings as you would with a more expensive camera. You can also check out the various cameras used in the shoot here to get a better idea of the variety of equipment I have available to me and what kinds of pictures I do or don’t do.
