I can get a pretty decent amount of spray paint done, especially if I’m doing something like a black and white print. It was easier when I was painting white, but I think it definitely requires some skills to pull it off, especially because it’s tricky to do in watercolor. The best way I’ve found to do this is to try and use a brush. You can try the old fashioned way – I’ve tried my hand at it the old fashioned way, in paintbrushes, with little pieces of white paint, a little dot of cream. Or you can use acrylic paint.
The point is to get in there and start adding paint to your canvas. You don’t want to paint all the way through the canvas. If you want to finish the canvas, you’ll still need to wait for it to dry completely, but the point is to get in and start adding ink and color.
For those of you who have worked with ink on canvas before, I have a few quick tips for getting in and finishing the ink quickly.
First, when it comes to painting on canvas, don’t paint everything at once
One of the first things you should do is to think about what you want to paint. I’ve done a lot of work on the side of a wall, and for the most part when I paint, the surface I want to paint that area on is the color I am painting to. A picture is always a better way to go because it’s quick and you can tell the difference between something and that piece of paper I am drawing it onto that is different – usually that is what I draw onto. When you are thinking about painting something, make sure that you start with your painting idea. If you go through your painting idea with every brush and paintbrush that you have, you’re going to end up with something that is pretty much that way most of the time. I like to start with something that looks a little too bright for me, but that doesn’t really mean anything. I will do something that I think doesn’t look good or something that is a lot darker, but I will give it a day or two to see what does and then I will be good to go. It’s good practice!
So I go through my painting idea, and then I will start with a light wash. The light wash gets rid of all the colors. Then I’ll apply some color for detail, or I’ll give a little bit more light to make it look
