When you’re in there on the street looking for something,” he said.
The graffiti is “outspoken and in your face” and “I would go to jail for that.”
“You know, I have trouble understanding just what’s out there, what’s real, what’s not, and what is art,” he said. “I think that’s what really upsets people.
“It’s such a great, great thing to be able to have artistic expression but at the same time there isn’t an appreciation of art for some reason.
“For myself personally, when I’m drawing, I’m usually doing a street art piece. But just being away from the streets, I want to see it, see what I can do, and if someone would like to see that, or maybe I can do that one time.”
Vinci said he likes taking graffiti from people because “that’s a really special thing”.

This is an excerpt from Chapter 9 of my new book: ‘The American Empire: The Age of the Great Powers’, due out October 17, 2016.
After nine years abroad, I returned home to the small town of St. Petersburg, as I had done so many times before, to report to my parents on the state of my business. My dad was still the principal of the town’s secondary school. He was not the only one. In the 1960s, he had taken over the high school and become its principal of students. The year before, a small school had had a teacher strike, so he too had taken over, along with a school board. Now he was one of the principals—a powerful position if there ever was one. He had become an unquestioned authority within these small towns.
In the 1960s, my dad owned the town’s largest fish fry restaurant, serving up steaks and fresh seafood to about a dozen local restaurants.
