A year ago, I was doing a lot of reading about the new era of mobile game development, in which studios were going for larger, more sophisticated worlds in which gamers spent more time playing. I couldn’t help but notice that, while mobile games were being built, they weren’t being made. With the launch of the highly anticipated AR game Pokémon Go on July 6, it was an opportune time for developers to announce that they had something special to talk about.
Pokémon Go is unlike any other AR game on the market. As you might expect from a game designed to capture hundreds of imaginary creatures, you are given a map of your surroundings which you can explore at your own pace and then use to collect Pokémon. The concept of it all is that you’re the trainer (or Pokémon) and you need to take care of them by bringing them out of hiding, and the game will do the rest. While other mobile AR games have tried to simulate this concept of “catching’ Pokémon, none of them have been as complete, or as comprehensive (or as fun) as Pokémon Go, that’s where the difference gets made.
The thing about Pokémon Go is that it is a mobile game, which means that every element has its own logic, design and presentation. Each Pokémon appears in a particular pattern (sometimes on purpose) and you have limited control over what it does. You just have to make sure you’re getting close enough to find it. In an effort to make this concept even more complicated, Pokémon Go has a built-in, very sophisticated trainer AI system. Here’s an example of how trainer AI works:

That is to say they are excited about the idea of finding real, actual, live Pokémon, and the fact that there are also a million of them within about six miles is certainly appealing. They’re also intrigued by the theory that augmented reality might have some great applications for
